Which is better pure mathematics or applied mathematics?

Pure Mathematics v/s Applied Mathematics

So, when I am studying in high school and in college also I noticed that I used to study two parts of Mathematics Pure and Applied. What are the major differences in Pure vs. Applied and what are examples of each? Read till the end to find out this answer.

If you want to keep studying maths, you might have to choose between applied and pure mathematics. But what’s the difference?

Let’s first try to understand the difference between the two:-

  1. Applied mathematics is the application of mathematical methods by different fields such as physics, engineering, medicine, biology, finance, business, computer science, and industry. Thus, applied mathematics is a combination of mathematical science and specialized knowledge.
  2. Used in Algebra, geometry, number theory, differential or integral calculus.
  3. Career options for applied mathematics are in scientific counting, accounts, statistics, Computer programmer, Engineer, Investment manager, etc.
  4. Considered normally easy for those having interests in mathematics.
  1. Pure mathematics is the study of mathematical concepts independently of any application outside mathematics. These concepts may or may not originate in real-world concerns, and the results obtained may later turn out to be useful for practical applications, but pure mathematicians are not primarily motivated by such applications.
  2. Pure mathematics has as its main purpose the search for a deeper understanding of mathematics itself.
  3. Data analysts, stock market analysis, search engines, teaching or tutors, research assistants, image processing applications, telecommunication are some of the career options for pure mathematics.
  4. Pure math is much more difficult as compared to applied mathematics.
  1. Pure math is good if you want to teach or go to graduate school in any math discipline. Applied math as an undergrad, including stats and operations research, is good for going out and getting a job.
  2. Pure mathematics is the field of research that concerns finding the deepest truths behind mathematical objects. Students of applied mathematics, on the other hand, are likely to take courses in their interested disciplines in which they could apply their math skills and knowledge.
  3. Pure Math is studied not for the sake of any academic purpose, however, applied math is studied in order to know how to explore(engineering, business, investments, statistics, and many more) other fields using mathematics.

Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. One seeks the most general ideas of operation which will bring together in simple, logical, and unified form the largest possible circle of formal relationships. In this effort toward logical beauty, spiritual formulas are discovered necessary for the deeper penetration into the laws of nature. ALBERT EINSTEIN
